"After the Storm"
‘He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.’

Psalm 107:29; John 1:5
Watercolour on 300gsm cold pressed paper
This picture captures the stillness of the sea after a tempest, the moment the light breaks out through the thick layers of clouds over Hong Kong Island. Even in the hardest of times and the darkest of storms there is hope in knowing that God is always in control, and that after the storm the light will come through once again.
Only two colours were used here to highlight and contrast the theme of light and darkness. The fisherman in his boat at the centre of the picture is representative of our vulnerability as individuals, alone, defenceless and unprotected in the face of storms and adversity. It also gives a nod to the historical beginnings of Hong Kong as a small fishing village, rising through the years to become one of the busiest metropolitan cities in the world. Hong Kong is no stranger to storms, with fierce typhoons frequenting the harbour city throughout the year which can often cause floods, landslides and damage. Yet despite the ferocious tempests in the night that may seem never-ending, despite the suffering we may face in this life which threaten to crush us, this picture shows the light and calm that always comes after and the hope we can have in God to carry us through it all.
